Strætó offers discounts for students: And this is how you retrieve them

Translation: Karitas M. Bjarkadóttir

A lot of students surely know the feeling: you’ve dragged yourself to the bus stop early in the morning, it’s cold, it’s dark. Maybe you take the last bus home from the Student Cellar. Then, most of you should have noticed a recent change in Strætó’s payment system. Last November, Strætó introduced its new payment system, which offers users access to Strætó in the capital region. Klappið, as the new system is called, supersedes the old Strætó app, which most students should be familiar with, as a digital payment system. Klappið is modelled after similar foreign systems, in which the users fill up their card, or their app, through their own accounts.

Along with the new payment system, the price of one-year membership cards for students has gone from 54.500 kr. per year down to 40.000 kr. The old system only offered students to buy 6 months membership cards or one year, whereas the new one has the option of buying one month at a time for 4.000 kr.

In order to receive the discount, you have to follow these four steps.

  1. Go to Uglan,  choose “Settings” and allow Strætó to access your information to be able to verify that you are an active student.

  2. Once you’ve given that access to Strætó, you have to go to klappid.is and log in to “My Pages”, where you identify yourself using an electronic ID.

  3. Then, the option to buy monthly-paid membership cards with a 50% discount pops up.

  4. You can choose between getting a Klapp card or using the Klapp app.

This discount is sure to come in handy for broke students who either can’t or don’t want to use a private vehicle or their own two feet. It can be quite pricey to buy a lot of individual Strætó tickets, and the new one-month membership plan offers users to commit to shorter periods than before. This might be a good motivation for those that want to try out a more eco-friendly transportation option for shorter periods, commute while the car is in the shop, and so on.
